Four Tips to Promote Your Business and Personal Brand on LinkedIn

Linkedin-Logo

LinkedIn, the world’s most widely-used professional social networking site, recently celebrated its 10th birthday.

To be honest, we were quite surprised that it has been 10 years. For some reason, it feels like it wasn’t too long ago when Allen Blue, Konstantin Guericke, Eric Ly, and Jean-Luc Vaillant officially launched the site. But of course, if we’re talking about the most surprising thing about LinkedIn, it would have to be its somewhat meteoric rise from being a humble startup with only “4,500 members in its first month” to being a public company with over 200 million users today. There’s no denying that LinkedIn has changed the landscape of social networking. When someone mentions LinkedIn, nobody thinks of cat pictures or self-indulgent status updates; everyone understands that it’s the de facto site for professional networking and, as such, “discretion, judiciousness, and courtesy” are expected, just like in real-life business situations.

To help you get the most out of your LinkedIn presence and make sure that you do not compromise your business and personal brand, here are some tips that will help you enhance your LinkedIn profile.

#1 Start with the basics.

If you are new to the site, LinkedIn University founder Josh Turner suggests completing your profile and taking your email contacts, exporting them into a CSV, and importing that CSV to LinkedIn. LinkedIn will then take care of sending invitations to those contacts so that you can save time—time, which you might probably spend on adding connections one by one.
After this, it’s time to get involved in the groups, particularly those in which your prospects are hanging out. Just be careful, as some groups are full of spam and offer no value whatsoever. If you can’t find a group that’s specific to your line of business, let’s say office phone system (read more) or customer service or marketing support solutions, you can start a new one and build it in such a way that people would flock to it to get or give relevant advice.

#2 Avoid these LinkedIn profile mistakes.

Always remember that there is a difference between personal and professional networking. In terms of building up your LinkedIn profile, it pays to use a recent picture that sends the message that you are ready to work full-time or ready to hobnob with the “big guys” (and gals!). That means “no dog, no husband/wife, no baby!” as explained by LinkedIn Career Expert Nicole Williams. You should also customize your connection request as opposed to using LinkedIn’s default message so that your intended recipient (e.g. a potential boss or client) would feel like you are really serious about building professional relationships. (Bonus tip: Do a bit of research on that person and include pertinent details in your connection request.)

#3 Take advantage of LinkedIn’s mobile applications.

There’s no excuse for you to not use the LinkedIn app, since it’s available on major mobile platforms (Android, iPhone, and Blackberry). One way you could use the app is to use its excellent calendar function, which can sync with your work calendar. It will then “give you the profile info (including mutual contacts) for everyone you’re scheduled to meet with.” This should come in handy especially if you do not have an assistant who can keep track of your meetings and other appointments. Just don’t expect the LinkedIn app to offer “all the functionality of the full browser-based site.” Treat it as a supplementary tool that’s able to “perform most of LinkedIn’s primary functions and give access to its most frequently used tools.”

#4 Aim for 50 – the Magic Connections Number.

Says LinkedIn Career Expert Nicole Williams, “When it comes to how many LinkedIn connections you should have, the magic number is 50.” Now it doesn’t mean you should stop at 50, just that 300 may be too many. Remember that it’s never a good idea to build your network only for it to be flooded with contacts that you don’t really know. 50 is a good target. With 50, you already have second- or third-degree connections, whom you can add to your network.

Move Over Groupon & Living Social Moolala is New Daily Deal

2/23/11 Austin, TX  Move Over Groupon & Living Social Moolala is the New Kid & Pays to Play

Michael D. Butler, Sr.

Moolala Trumps Groupon, Living Social & Daily Deals with Payouts

People love to use coupons. People love to save money. People love to use Facebook and Twitter. The success of Groupon, Living Social and Daily Deals are a testament to this fact.  Many business owners say Groupon has helped them advertise their business to more people. One Chiropractor said: “We had 500 new clients come in for a massage and while we didn’t make any money that is 500 new people who came into our business who otherwise wouldn’t have known about us.”

Value conscious consumers have created quite a buzz in recent months and driven the stock price of these companies through the roof. Note-Groupon recently turned down Goolge’s $6 Billion offer. Basically the way it works is, you see a deal you like, you share it, and if enough people buy it, you win. Well now with Moolala, consumers will have a chance to win big. Not just by scoring some cool stuff at a great price but actually getting paid to share it with their friends.

Now there is a new kid on the block Moolala based out of Austin, TX (it’s free-get it here) will throw it’s cowboy hat into the arena and see if they can lasso some of those coupon fanatics. Moolala offers great daily deals but here is where they are different. They actually pay out fees based on referrals. Watch the video to learn how it works.

So the business wins, the referrer wins and Moolala the comapny wins, hopefully, we’ll see but they sure have a good model to follow with the other internet based discount programs.

Will Moolala give Groupon and Living Social a run for their money? It may be too soon to see but on March 1, 2011 Moolala will officially “launch” and consumers and business everywhere can see if their life will forever change.

How much of your content are you syndicating online?

Google is looking for:

1) Relevant content to index

2) Frequently updated content

3) Comments on each of your blog posts

4) People tweeting those blog posts

5) Your blog having an RSS reader

These all help add up to improved Google Page Rank. There are many other things (Google looks at over 100 things-like quality of back lings, meta tags, age of domain, etc.)

Business trends are moving so fast globally that the only way to keep up is to navigate from an internal compass that can help you network with your future and monetize your base with your core offerings now.

Last week as we watched the Nation wait for President Obama to address the Nation about Egypt regime change the markets and bloggers waited to tell us their interpretation of what that would mean for sovereign people everywhere.

The world’s knowledge collectively double’s exponentially and that acceleration statistic is increasing at a mind-boggling rate!

Publishing content online will me the success mantra of the future “new norm” in business. Globally and in the United States. Twitter is just the start, Facebook, YouTube and Linked in are a part of that but the real value is in the blog and the frequency of the blog updates and how relevant Google ranks your blog.

By commenting on other blogs that are related to your topic and by frequently updating your content, allowing comments on each of your blog posts and insuring that people are tweeting those blog posts all add up to top of Google.

Google Search Engines Looking-Relevant Content in Your Blog?

Get Your Website Ranked and Rolling

Tulsa, OK

Michael D. Butler, SR. M3 New Media 1/30/11

The question is: How can a new website get ranked higher in search engines than a website that has more history and more content?

seo-relevant-search-google
Relevant Google Search

Google looks at over 100 factors when determining relevancy for your website. I’m not going to get real technical here. We could have one of our developers or I.T. gurus do some serious writing here that will blow all our minds. The goal today is to give you a few important things that can help your website get some very noticeable traction and indexing from google.

  • Connect Your Blog to Your Website--Or even make your blog your website. It has never been easier to custom design your own blog with a theme or template that you create or design. Your blog, if properly built and on the right platform can greatly increase your unique visitors and page views-thereby helping your page rank and SEO.
  • Provide Relevant Content With Frequent Updates-Maybe you remember President Bill Clinton playing his saxaphone on the Arsenio Hall Show in 1992 many experts believe this event had a measureable impact on the psyche of a generation-The M-TV Generation. Bill Clinton won the White House a few months later; unseating incumbent President George H.W. Bush and making him a one term President.

Why does President Clinton playing his saxaphone on late night TV make me think of the word: “Relevance.”  Because, That was the day in the minds of many Americans that Bill Clinton became relevant. It was the day a Presidential candidate from Arkansas connected with a large demographic; and that connection, won him the White House.

We saw a similar phenomenon in the 2008 elections when Barak Obama announced he wanted to take his blackberry into the White House. Of course this made the Secret Service freak out over the security ramifications. John McCain thinking he could play on the Executive Branch ‘security threat issues’ announced in one of the biggest Public Relations faux paus: “I don’t text.” That announcement was meant to unite a Nation around a future Commander in Chief.  Although intended to communicate security and traditional, ‘old-school’ values, instead, back-fired and communicated: “out-of-touch” and ‘irrelevant.’

Barak Obama went on to become not just the first African-American President but the first US President to successfully use Social Media to get elected.

Social-Media-Strategy-for-campaigns
Barak Obama Used Social Media To Win Presidency

These two presidential campaign stories aren’t entirely how google views content but are interesting to notice how they did impact the elections. Ask yourself: ‘How am I being relevant and getting found by my base?”

  • Comment, Comment, Comment

Once you have a new blog post up make sure you get lots of comments and Re-Tweets. Ask your friends, family and total strangers to comment your blog. Google likes blogs with lots of relevant content, that is updated often, and has people leaving comments and are Tweeting you with a good share button like TweetMeMe. One of the best ways to get people to comment your blog is to find relevant blogs that are of interest to you and similar to your target, comment and link to them and ask for a reciprocating comment or link.

  • Be Patient and Keep At It!

Like anything worthwhile, blogging takes TIME to get traction, but when time is not on your side: adding daily relevant content and using your social media accounts to drive traffic and page views to your site will pay your richly over time. Happy Blogging to you! If you found this blog post helpful please RT or comment. We love to follow back on Twitter and if your blog is relevant enough may link to you-so please ask us!

Blogging & Photo Sharing for Better Search Engine Optimization SEO

Are your images getting indexed by google? Do you know how to optimize your photos?

There are over 100 factors that must be considered when creating positive SEO for clients. Photo optimization is often overlooked as a very crucial element in photo marketing in your business. While having sharp photos alone will not help your google rank, having properly titled, tagged, and labeled photos can and will help your blog content get found and indexed more efficiently by search engines.  Do a google search and see that you can search under: images, news, shopping, places, videos, and photos.

5 Tips for Better Photo Marketing

Photo marketing
Photo Marketing Strategy

1) Have a long-term photo marketing strategy. From google earth to google maps to google places to google local-your customer’s want to be able to find you. And properly placed and tagged photos is a big part of that strategy. Look at where your company and your industry is headed and do some vision casting and white boarding into the new blue ocean of where you want to go. Then begin to create your future there in real-time, online, and in the virtual world. I have a friend who gets 70,000 views per month at Tulsa Food Blog. You can see how they use pictures and text to interact with their fans and how many comments, reviews, and downloads they get.

2) Crowd-source your photo marketing. If I am a restaurant owner I am having photo contests. I would do the same if I were a professional photographer. We are currently working with a Non-Profit that does Wildlife Conservation in South Africa, Nikela.org is based out of Austin, TX they rely heavily on friends, partners and activists around the globe to source them with photos and videos. They have had several video and photo contests and have created some great awareness using photo campaigns.  I want as many people taking photos, tagging photos, and commenting photos online as possible. On Facebook, Twitpic, Flickr, everywhere! When someone comments a photo or tags a photo-BAM it shows up in everyone’s news feed and gives the opportunity for friends who may be passionate about your cause to find you!

3. Create a photo album for each revenue vertical of your company. For example if I am a photographer and my primary 3 verticals are: Weddings, Senior portraits and Family portraits then I will create 3 separate photo albums and frequently add content (photos) that are tagged, titled and tweeted out. Every time you re-load to this photo album, on Facebook for example, the comments get re-populated within the timeline/news feeds.

4. Adopt a Cause-Give Back & Capture it All Online Unlike the newspaper, billboard, radio and television advertising; what you put online will be available in cyber-spaced and retrievable virtually forever. Since the corporate melt-down days of Enron and Arthur Andersen, the public wants to connect with real people and real faces. The internet, Twitter, Facebook and open forums have facilitated a dialouge that can benefit end consumers and companies. By adopting a cause that your business, team, investors and founders can benefit, create awareness and gain some incredible exposure by working with. These photos will help create a culture of team work, community empowerment and cooperative networking-all from a few photos!

Two non-profit organizations M3 has been pleased to work with is SCTNow.org & OATHCoalition.org M3 New Media has also consulted with a for-profit company Child Safety, Inc. that utilizes a patented technology within digital photos to decrease the time it takes law enforcement to issue an Amber Alert from 50 minutes to 10 minutes. So in this example with Child Safety, Inc. (CSI) you could say that photos are not just for marketing and SEO; they can also be used to save lives!

5. Be consistent and Have Fun! With the advent of the iphone, Android and a dozen other smart phones, now is the time to unleash your inner Rock Star and have fun with photos. I think the future of marketing, living and interacting will be online. If a Baby-Boomer’s house was burning, the first thing they would grab as they run out the door would be the photo album. Generation X and the Millennials would grab the dog and the iphone. Flickr recently celebrated 5 Billion photo uploads and this was the photo they chose to feature:
